REPENT! BECOME A NEW MAN!!

“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts. 2:38)
A Hindu said to a native missionary, ‘I am sure if I lead a good life and do what is right, giving up my bad habits, God will be pleased with me and receive me in heaven”. “That is the way many people reason today” replied the missionary. “You know the babul tree – a tree with long sharp thorns? Now, suppose you break off from its branches a hundred or more of the nasty thorns, then will the tree cease to be a babul tree?” “Certainly not” said the man. The missionary continued, “Suppose you apparently stop one or another or even many of your evil ways and habits, you would still remain the same like the babul tree. You must have an entirely new nature – you must become a new man, in order to please God. Only
Christ can give you a new heart.” Is not the missionary’s reply sound and scriptural?
Dear friends, repentance must lead to a complete change in life. It is not just modifying some aspects of our character. The first and only message of Jesus was “Repent” (Matthew 4:17). “Repent means to regret or to feel sad for having done some bad deed” was the definition of a small child in a Sunday school. But just feeling sad is not enough. Such sorrow should cause a complete change of action. Judas was filled with sorrow for betraying Jesus but he did not change. This is not repentance. However, Peter’s repentance was true. He wept bitterly for disowning Jesus, truly repented and then became one of His most faithful disciples. Paul writes in Acts 3:19 “Repent then and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out.” The blood of Jesus alone can cleanse us from all our sins. So let us confess our sins and repent completely.
Lord, give me new heart; Wash away all my sins and my bad habits. But, more than that I seek Your grace to become a new man through true repentance in my inner man and make me a true disciple. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
